Guest | March 4, 2022This was Percy I Hale's store at 112-114 W Main St (pre-July-1970 address; today in 2022 it is the Chorus Public House, with its address being 154 W Main St). According to the 1908 Stoughton city directory, the store dealt in dry goods, carpets, millinery, and ladies tailoring. His store in Stoughton was in business from 1890 until 1940 -- it was at this location from about 1898 (when the building had just been completed) until 1940. The "window trimmer" mentioned in the photo caption is Fritzoff ("Fritz") C Kroken who worked for P I Hale from about 1906 until late spring of 1940 (when he opened his own store).DSCF0510 web DSCF0510 web

Derek Westby | August 21, 2020This could possibly be the building Stoughton Floral is in.Guest | March 4, 2022The copious window advertising is for KC Baking Powder, which was manufactured by the Jaques Manufacturing Co. in Chicago starting in about 1890. Its famous long-running slogan was "25 ounces for 25c" -- as the price of that baking powder was kept the same for 44+ years. This may be the old storefront of Robert Rasmussen's grocery (which was in business before 1903), which was known as Rasmussen and Howe from about 1903 until at least 1910 (after about 1915 it was known as the Howe Brothers grocery). If so, this photo would be of 116 W Main St (old address system before July 1, 1970) -- which is 168 W Main St today (where Spry Whimsy is in 2022).DSCF0517 web DSCF0517 web

Guest | August 21, 2020This was a building located at the corner of South Division and Main Streets when the movie theater now sits. It burned down in early 1960's. David ListugCurator@HistoricStoughton.org | April 3, 2024This was reportedly the tallest building between Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien when it was erected in 1860. It was known as the Williams Block, built by Nelson Williams, son-in-law of Luke Stoughton. He was married to Delette Stoughton. The second floor was an opera house and was the scene of many formal parties.Curator@HistoricStoughton.org | April 3, 2024The fire that destroyed it on September 24, 1966 started in the basement of the Schulz Brothers store (formerly the Daylight Store) next door. Curator@HistoricStoughton.org | April 3, 2023Photo appears to be from 1907. Based on the buildings that are present, the newly paved street, and the sign on the Hyland-Olson building that reads "Our 10th A...." The hospital was founded by Michael Iverson, a native of Norway who arrived in Stoughton in 1891. The Iverson family and the hospital staff all resided in the hospital building during its earliest years of operation. The hospital was purchased by the city in 1924 and was renamed the Stoughton Community Hospital. The original building was razed in 1958.
